Sustainable Building Choices Worth Considering

Sustainability in a renovation doesn’t have to mean an all-or-nothing eco-build. Some of the most cost-effective changes are straightforward: better wall and loft insulation, air-tightness detailing around new openings, and glazing specified to modern U-values rather than the minimum required.

Where a heat pump isn’t in the budget right now, it’s still worth designing pipework and radiator sizing so the system is heat-pump-ready for later — retrofitting a heat pump onto radiators sized for a gas boiler is a much bigger job than doing it at the design stage.

Material choices matter too — FSC-certified timber and responsibly sourced materials cost little or nothing extra in most cases, but need to be specified rather than assumed.
