DIY vs Hiring a Builder: What Actually Saves You Money

Painting, basic garden landscaping and flat-pack furniture are genuinely sensible DIY territory — low risk if it goes wrong, and the time saved by hiring someone rarely justifies the cost.

Structural work, electrics beyond a socket swap, and anything needing Building Regulations sign-off are a different story. Getting these wrong doesn’t just cost money to fix — it can affect your home insurance, your ability to sell the property, and in some cases your safety.

The middle ground — things like tiling or basic carpentry — comes down to your own skill and the tools you’re willing to buy for a one-off job. If in doubt, a quote costs nothing and gives you a real number to compare against.
