Whatever you think of smart home gadgets, a renovation is the cheapest and least disruptive time to put the groundwork in for them — because the walls are already open.
Running extra low-voltage cabling for future lighting control, ceiling speakers, or additional network points costs very little compared to the cost of chasing them into finished plaster later. Even if you don’t fit the end devices straight away, having the cabling in place means you can add them without opening anything up again.
Underfloor heating with proper zoned thermostats, video doorbells wired rather than battery-powered, and a decent number of network points rather than relying entirely on WiFi are the three things we’d suggest planning for even on a modest budget.
